The Rhythm-Riffers
BIOGRAPHY AND DISCOGRAPHY
The teenage band who worked behind vocalist The Great Gates from 1949-1951 got time in the studio to cut some instrumentals which were issued under this name. Though the music itself was fine the record is more notable for who it featured, among them saxophonists Marvin Phillips and Emory Perry who later scored as the vocal duo Marvin & Johnny in the mid-1950’s, and pianist Richard Lewis who as Dick Lewis was Imperial Records’ first entry into the rock field two years earlier as a 15 year old and who would play behind a number of Los Angeles based rockers in the early 50’s as well as get some releases of his own leading The Barons.
THE RHYTHM RIFFERS DISCOGRAPHY (Records Reviewed To Date On Spontaneous Lunacy):
LATE AFTER HOURS
(Selective 103; June, 1949)
As backing band… for The Great Gates.
RACE TRACK BLUES
(Selective 108; October, 1949)
As backing band… for The Great Gates.
FANDANGO
(Selective 111; November, 1949)
A solid groove, a democratic arrangement letting each member have time in the spotlight and some really strong playing from all involved make this a sign of things to come for its members. (6)
HOLIDAY HOP
(Selective 111; November, 1949)
A record done in by a bad arrangement as the lead horn plays pretty well but clashes with the other tenor playing a counterpoint in the same tone all while the piano chips in without any sense of direction. (2)
